Telehealth Therapy: Is It as Effective as In-Person?

The evidence base on telehealth therapy grew dramatically during the pandemic and continues to strengthen. For many common concerns, outcomes are roughly equivalent to in-person therapy. Telehealth is not a second-tier substitute — but it is not the right fit for every case.

Where Telehealth Works Well

Individual therapy for anxiety, depression, and life transitions. Couples therapy when both partners can join from separate spaces. Ongoing work with an established therapeutic relationship. Clients in rural or underserved areas. Clients whose schedules make commuting difficult.

Where In-Person Is Usually Better

Trauma processing that requires full presence. Family therapy with young children. Psychoeducational evaluations, which are administered in person. High-acuity cases with significant safety concerns.

What Makes Telehealth Work

A private, quiet space on your end. A reliable internet connection. Willingness to tolerate occasional tech hiccups. A therapist practiced in telehealth-specific skills — managing silence, reading body language through a camera, navigating technical interruptions.

Privacy and Law

Telehealth sessions must be HIPAA-compliant. In New Jersey, clients must be in New Jersey at the time of the session for a New Jersey-licensed therapist to provide care. Fort Lee Psych uses a HIPAA-compliant video platform for telehealth sessions with NJ residents.

Hybrid Approaches

Many clients mix in-person and telehealth — in-person for key sessions, telehealth for logistics-heavy weeks. This is usually the most sustainable long-term pattern.
