Independent vs School District Evaluations: Which Does Your Child Need?
Parents often assume that if the school has already evaluated their child, an independent evaluation is redundant. The two serve overlapping but distinct purposes, and families who understand the difference get better outcomes for their children.
The School District Evaluation
Conducted by the Child Study Team under IDEA, a district evaluation is designed primarily to determine whether a child qualifies for special education services under state and federal guidelines. Its scope is shaped by that legal purpose.
The Independent Evaluation
An independent psychoeducational evaluation is typically more comprehensive. It uses a broader battery, examines more domains, and produces a report oriented toward clinical understanding and advocacy — not just eligibility determination. It can identify conditions the school evaluation may not have tested for.
When to Pursue an Independent Evaluation
The school said your child does not qualify but you still see struggling. The school's report feels thin or generic. You want documentation to support SAT or ACT accommodation requests. You suspect a learning disability, ADHD, or gifted profile that the school testing did not flag. You want leverage for an IEP or 504 negotiation.
Your Rights as a New Jersey Parent
Under New Jersey special education regulations, parents have the right to obtain an independent educational evaluation (IEE) at their own expense — and, in certain circumstances, at public expense. An independent evaluation must be considered by the district as part of the IEP process.
School Advocacy at Fort Lee Psych
Fort Lee Psych attends IEP and 504 meetings with families across Bergen County to present the evaluation findings directly and advocate for appropriate accommodations.
